Which marks count toward an Alberta university admission average, when offers go out, and what a conditional offer actually depends on.
Most Alberta universities calculate an admission average from a set of Grade 12 courses — usually five, including English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 and the specific subjects the program requires. The exact combination is set by the program, not by the province.
Offers frequently go out before Grade 12 is finished, based on interim marks and sometimes on Grade 11 results. That's why Grade 11 matters more than students expect — it isn't formally part of the admission average at most institutions, but it's often what an early offer is based on.
Most early offers are conditional. The condition is generally that final marks stay at or above a stated level. Final marks in diploma courses are blended — mostly school-awarded, with the diploma exam making up about a third — so a diploma result well below the school mark can pull a final average below the condition after the offer was accepted.
Alberta's Rutherford Scholarship is calculated on high school marks across Grades 10, 11 and 12, with separate components. Requirements and averages are published at alberta.ca — check them directly, since they've changed over the years.
The admission average calculation is program-specific and published on each institution's admissions pages. Applications for Alberta institutions run through ApplyAlberta; transcripts and diploma registration run through myPass.
Nothing here is a reason to panic in Grade 11 — it's a reason to know that Grade 11 counts for something and that the final blended mark is the one the condition tests.
