Somebody is already using the account you’re about to pay for.
We keep a number of Joseki accounts free, and we hand them out without asking anyone to prove they need one. That costs money. This is where the money comes from.
$70 is one account, for one month. Your money buys tokens at the rate everyone pays, and they go into the pool that free places are granted from — credited to real student accounts by the same code that runs every paying account.
They go to families who ask for one: kids in care and at-risk youth, people coming out of prison and starting over, households where the money genuinely is not there this year. We do not ask which. There is no form to prove it and no queue to wait in — a place is granted the moment it is asked for, because a family made to wait and be assessed has been means-tested whether we call it that or not.

A single payment.
This is a purchase, not a charitable donation. Joseki is not a registered charity and no tax receipt is issued — you’re buying tokens, and we allocate them to a pool that students who need them draw from.
Payment is handled by Stripe — your card details never touch this site. We do not publish buyers’ names anywhere, and no record ties a payment to the family it paid for. That is deliberate: the students on free places do not know they are on one, and nothing we do should let anyone else work it out either.
Where it does not go
Every dollar is credited to student accounts as tokens. It does not pay for the site, for hosting, for the model bills on paying accounts, or for anyone’s salary — those come out of what the paying accounts pay. If more is bought than there are places open, it stays in the pool and opens more.
