Terms of Service

Last updated: July 2026

These are the terms for using Joseki, a study tool built by Cardan Marketing Solutions for Alberta students in Grade 9 and up. By registering as a parent or using Joseki as a student, you're agreeing to these terms.

1. What Joseki is

Joseki is a recognition-training tool. It trains a student to identify what an exam question is actually asking before they answer it, checks their vocabulary against the language of the course, and gives them a place to plan an essay. It does not write essays, solve problems, or complete assignments for a student, and it's built so it can't.

2. No guaranteed results

We don't promise a specific grade, mark improvement, or exam outcome. What the method is built on — retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and recognizing the right first move before executing it — is supported by research on learning generally. What that does for any individual student depends on the student, their teacher, and how much they actually use it, and we're not going to claim otherwise.

3. Accounts

A parent or guardian registers and sets up each child's account — a student doesn't register themselves. There are no passwords: a parent gets a token, and a student joins with a one-time code the parent gives them. Keep both private; anyone with the parent token can see that family's reports, and anyone with an unused join code can join as that child.

4. Subscriptions and billing

5. Acceptable use

6. What students write, and contacting a parent

Parts of the app ask a student to write in their own words. We keep what a student writes and what the app said back, and we review it to improve the service. How long it is kept, what is removed before any of it is reviewed outside the company, and how to have it deleted are set out in our Privacy Policy.

We reserve the right to contact a parent or guardian if a student writes something that suggests they may be at risk of harm, or may pose a risk to another person, and to contact a parent about serious misuse of the service. By registering a student you agree that we may do so.

This is not a monitoring or safety service. We do not read everything, we do not review in real time, and we give no undertaking that we will notice, correctly interpret, or act on anything a student writes. Nothing in this section creates a duty to monitor, to detect, or to intervene. Nobody here is a counsellor, a psychologist or a clinician, and this service must not be relied on in place of one. If a young person is in danger or in crisis, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line.

Where the law requires us to report something, we will comply with it.

7. The pilot / research use

Some students may take part in a small research pilot measuring whether the training approach helps. If your family is invited to participate, you'll be told what that involves and can opt out at any point without losing access to the regular product. See our Privacy Policy for how pilot data is used.

8. Intellectual property

The question banks, app, and site content are owned by Cardan Marketing Solutions. Your family's own study data belongs to you; see the Privacy Policy for how to request a copy or deletion.

9. Termination

We can suspend or close an account for violating these terms, or for behaviour that puts other families' data or the service itself at risk. A parent can close their own account at any time.

10. Limitation of liability

Joseki is provided "as is." We work carefully on accuracy, but we don't guarantee the service will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we're not liable for exam or academic outcomes. Nothing here limits liability where the law doesn't allow it to be limited.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Alberta, Canada.

12. Changes to these terms

If these terms change in a way that matters, we'll post the update here and change the date at the top of the page.
