If you don't know the words, you can't understand the question

There's a kind of struggling that looks like not understanding the concept and isn't.

The student reads a Biology 30 question. It uses four terms. They half-know three of them and are guessing at the fourth. They can more or less reconstruct what's being asked — but it takes them twenty seconds and real effort, and they've done that on every question, for two hours.

They know the biology. They spent the exam translating it.

Vocabulary isn't the easy part

It gets treated as the trivial layer — memorisation, the bit before the real thinking. That's backwards. It's the gate. Everything else in the course is on the other side of it.

Three specific costs:

Reading gets slow. Every unfamiliar term is a small stall. On a three-hour exam those stalls add up to real minutes and real fatigue.

Precision goes. In science, terms that sound similar mean different things, and an answer using the wrong one reads as a misunderstanding even when the thinking was sound. Markers can only mark what's on the page.

Confidence drops for no good reason. A student who doesn't recognise a word assumes they missed something in class. Usually they didn't. They missed a definition, which takes four minutes to fix — but it feels like being lost in the whole unit.

The flashcard argument, settled

Flashcards have a reputation as a childish study method. The evidence disagrees, and fairly emphatically.

The 2013 Dunlosky review of ten common study techniques rated practice testing and distributed practice as high utility. Flashcards, done properly, are both at once — you're retrieving the answer rather than reviewing it, and you're doing it in short sessions spread over time.

The same review rated summarising, highlighting and rereading as low utility — the three things most students actually do.

So the ranking most high schoolers carry around is close to inverted. The method that feels like studying is the weak one. The one that feels a bit remedial is among the strongest available.

Doing it properly

Cover the answer. If you can see it, you're rereading, and rereading is the low-utility one. The effort of retrieval is the mechanism. If it feels easy, it isn't working.

Short and frequent beats long and rare. Ten minutes, four times a week. Not forty minutes on Sunday. This is distributed practice and it's most of the benefit.

Keep the ones you get wrong in circulation. The natural instinct is to retire cards that feel done and keep grinding the hard ones out of guilt. Do the opposite: the ones you miss come back sooner and more often, and the ones you've genuinely got can go quiet for a week.

Say it out loud. Producing the definition in words is closer to what an exam asks than recognising it on a page.

Formulas count. So do units, symbols, and the difference between two terms that sound alike. Anything with a right answer that has to come out of memory under pressure.

The awkward truth about "I'll just look it up"

There's a fair argument that memorising definitions is pointless when everything is searchable in two seconds.

It's a fair argument everywhere except the room where about a third of a Grade 12 mark gets decided. No phone, no laptop, no help. Whatever's in memory is the entire toolkit for three hours.

That's not an argument for memorising more generally. It's an argument that this specific, narrow, boring thing has to be in memory, because the assessment is built that way and no amount of disagreeing changes the exam.

Twenty minutes a week across a semester covers it. It's the cheapest work in the course and the most reliably skipped.

For parents

You don't need to know the content. Ask them to define one term, out loud, without looking.

If they can, great — pick another. If they hesitate, you've found something, and you found it in ten seconds without a single argument about effort.
