Studying everything is how you run out of time

Here's how most exam studying goes.

The student opens the notes at the beginning. Unit one is familiar and pleasant, because they already know it. Unit two is fine. By unit four the exam is in two days and everything after that gets a panicked skim.

The units they know best got the most time. The units they'd fail on got the least. And the whole thing felt like hard work, because it was.

Why it goes wrong

Two reasons, and neither is laziness.

Studying what you know feels good. Re-reading familiar material produces a strong sense of understanding. That feeling is the reward, and it comes fastest from the material you already have. Working on the thing you're bad at feels like drowning, and it produces no comfort at all — which is precisely why it's the productive part.

Nobody teaches the plan. "Study for your exam" is the instruction. The student invents a plan, and the obvious plan is start at the start.

What the evidence actually supports

There's a large review of study techniques from 2013 by Dunlosky and colleagues that rated ten common methods. It's the most useful thing a student could read on this and almost none have.

Two techniques came out with high utility: practice testing and distributed practice. Five came out low — and they include the ones students rely on most: summarising, highlighting and underlining, and rereading.

Read that again, because it's the whole article. The most popular study methods in every high school in Alberta are the ones with the weakest evidence behind them.

Practice testing means answering questions without the notes open. Flashcards count. Past questions count. The point is retrieving the answer, not reviewing it.

Distributed practice means spreading it out. Four sessions over two weeks beats one long session, even at identical total hours.

Which means the standard approach — one long cram, mostly re-reading, mostly on the units you like — manages to be wrong on all three axes at once.

Build the plan backwards

Start at the exam date and work back.

1. Write down the date. Actual date. Not "June sometime."

2. Find the weak spots first — with a test, not a feeling. Do practice questions across every unit, cold, before making any plan. Which ones you get wrong is the plan. Which ones you feel shaky on is not reliable; students routinely feel confident about material they can't reproduce, which is why the feeling has to be checked against performance.

3. Rank the units by weakness × weight. Weakness alone isn't enough. If probability is 30–35% of a Math 30-2 exam and you're weak on it, that's the top of the list by a distance. A unit that's 5% of the exam and mildly shaky can wait. Weightings for every diploma course are published in the Information Bulletins on alberta.ca, free.

4. Assign sessions, worst first, spread out. Not "study Tuesday." "Tuesday: probability, practice questions, 45 minutes." Named unit, named method, named length.

5. Re-test the weak ones a week later. This is the step everyone drops and it's where distributed practice does its work. One session on your worst unit doesn't fix it. Three sessions across two weeks might.

6. Leave the last two days for review, not new ground. If a unit is still unstarted 48 hours out, the plan was too big. Note that for next time, and spend the 48 hours consolidating what will actually hold.

What this looks like in practice

Three weeks out, Chemistry 30, weak on equilibrium and acids-bases, fine on thermochemistry:

Notice thermochemistry appears zero times until the practice exam. That's not neglect. That's the whole point — the practice exam will tell you if you were wrong about it, and if you were, you'll still have days left.

The parent version

You don't need to know any chemistry to help with this. Two questions:

"Which units are you weakest on?" If they can't answer, they haven't tested themselves, and that's step one.

"When are you working on those?" If the answer is vague, the plan is a wish.

That's the whole intervention. It takes four minutes and it's worth more than an hour of hovering.
